Read moreSegment routes event data from an app to dozens of destinations (marketing tools, ad platforms, data warehouses) and prices the service by monthly tracked users (MTU). Cost scales with traffic rather than with how much value the data delivers, and every event that passes through Segment's pipeline is data that lives on a third party's infrastructure before it reaches your own systems. A self-hosted event pipeline keeps that routing step, and the raw event data, on infrastructure the team owns.
A Segment-style pipeline needs three pieces working together: SDKs that capture events consistently from web, mobile, and server code; a way to define destinations without writing custom integration code for each one; and enough event retention to replay history when a new destination joins the stack later. Tools that stop at dashboards and analytics, without a real event-routing layer, only solve part of what Segment does.
PostHog began as a product analytics tool, covering funnels, retention, and dashboards, and later added a CDP-style data pipeline product that ingests events once and forwards them to more than 50 destinations, including ad platforms, CRMs, and data warehouses. Because analytics, session replay, feature flags, and the event pipeline all read from the same ingestion layer, an event captured for a funnel report is already available to route to a destination without a second SDK integration. Self-hosting PostHog moves event storage into your own Postgres and ClickHouse deployment, replacing Segment's per-MTU billing with infrastructure cost you control directly.
Teams that need only destination routing, with no analytics requirement, will find PostHog's product surface larger than necessary for that single job. Teams already running PostHog for analytics get the pipeline without standing up a second tool alongside it.
